Shah Bano's daughter, Siddiqa Begum, has filed a petition in the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a stay on the release of "Haq." Siddiqa's lawyer, Tausif Warsi, told reporters, "The film is based on the landmark case of M.A. Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum. For the first time in Indian history, a Muslim woman fought for maintenance and won. It is essential to obtain consent before using someone's personal life or name, as this falls under the right to privacy."

Shah Bano's grandson, Zubair Ahmed Khan, also spoke out about the film being made without the family's consent. He said, "When the teaser was released, we learned that a film had been made on my grandmother. Many facts have been distorted in the teaser. This is our personal matter that has been given a commercial angle. They should have asked our permission. Ordinary people will see the film and think it depicts true events."

Makers of Haq offered clarification
The makers of Haq claim that some liberties have been taken to dramatize the events. It is a fictional story. The producer's lawyer, Ajay Bagadia, said, "The film's disclaimer clearly states that it is inspired by two things: the 1985 Supreme Court decision in favor of Shah Bano and a book called 'Bano, India's Daughter.' This is a fictional story, and it is not necessary that everything be shown is true."

The Shah Bano case is considered a landmark decision in favor of the rights of Muslim women. 62-year-old Shah Bano, a resident of Indore, was divorced by her husband, Mohammad Ahmed Khan, after 40 years of marriage. Shah Bano sought maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC). The Supreme Court ruled in her favor, but some members of the Muslim community opposed it, saying it was an interference in Islamic personal law.
