Imtiaz Ali's film 'Amar Singh Chamkila' shows the story of singer Chamkila, who was once famous in Punjab and abroad.

Amar Singh Chamkila was born in July 1960 in a poor Dalit Sikh family in Punjab. Due to his passion for singing, one day he shined so much that he went ahead of all the people who had ever given him opportunities. People became jealous of him. Despite using obscene words in the songs of Amar Singh Chamkila, his songs became so popular that apart from Punjab, he started becoming famous in foreign countries also. At that time there was a period of terrorism in Punjab. Some people threatened him and he also sang religious songs, but on the demand of the listeners, he returned to his old path. Sadly, in March 1988, he and his singer-wife Amarjeet were shot. The shine of the songs of Chamkila, who passed away before the age of 28, is still there in the atmosphere of Punjab. Imtiaz Ali's film 'Amar Singh Chamkila', released on Netflix, shows the story of the same bright person shining and extinguishing quickly.

Why was there a need to make a film?

This film based on him, in the name of Chamkila's story, does more to expose the hypocrisy of our society. One scene is wonderful - some people who have come to threaten Chamkila, lie down in front of him as soon as they arrive. After saying, 'We are your followers', they threaten him, extort money and then go away saying 'We are your followers'.

Through the story of Chamkila, writers Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali take us into the heart of Punjab, the singers of Punjab, and the listeners of Punjab of that era. The script of this film, which is written very tightly and systematically, seems to be faltering in the beginning. But then it seems that this was not a faltering, but a caution before moving carefully because after this, when the film starts playing, neither the fingers go to the pause button nor the eyes move away from the screen.

He enhanced the film by using color-changing scenes, collages, animation, and photographs of the real Amar Singh Chamkila. Which gives a different kind of shine to the story of this film. Lyrics by Irshad Kamil and A.R. Rahman's music take the film to a different magical world. What makes this film different is its audio which is in sync with the visuals of the film. The singers of these songs have also left no stone unturned. The film on-screen promises to take the audience to a different world.

The hard work put into the design of the film and its characters is visible. The truth is that the research done on this entire film must have been very deep and that is why this film also has a lot of depth.

Diljit Dosanjh has got lost in the role of Chamkila in the film. He has played a very good role. Parineeti Chopra has been very good and effective. The work of all other artists has also been praiseworthy. DOP Anurag Arora was very effective. But the one artist who left a mark on the hearts and minds was Anjum Batra as Tikki Pa'ji. His acting was very effective and deep. The film 'Amar Singh Chamkila' has been made in a different way which makes it special. Do watch this film once.
