In fact, during her recent conversation, Kiran Rao shared that, "It (separation) happened easily because it took us time to reach a stage where we were ready for divorce. We worked very well on our marriage for a long time. Even when we decided to get divorced, it was done very thoughtfully. We never fought. We had arguments from time to time, but there was nothing that couldn't be resolved within 12 hours. These were the same kind of disagreements that one might have with one's parents."

Continuing her talk, Kiran Rao said, "We knew there was a lot to save in this relationship; we didn't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We resolved it in a way that it wasn't like cutting the rope in half, but it was like opening it up. We took our time and opened it up slowly. So, in some ways, it was closed. There was also a sense of building the trust of the family and Azad's support system, making sure he never felt the emotional impact of it. We don't want to get married, but that doesn't mean we don't like or love each other. In any marriage, there will be things you don't like about your spouse. There will be things that bother you about the other person - certain triggers that always agitate you and lead to fights. But there are also reasons why you married this person and there are also things you like in them."

In the end, it is about what you want to hold on to: do you want to keep the bad feelings or what worked for many years? We decided to keep the best parts of our relationship and let go of what did not work by getting a divorce".
