In fact, director Nag Ashwin said in his latest interview, "It has been a universal response that people liked the first half and that is absolutely correct. If the audience likes two hours and 54 minutes in a three-hour film, then I will accept it. This kind of film is not our cup of tea. The ambition was big in the sense that there was a lot at stake in it apart from us. Many producers were waiting for the result of this sci-fi film. If it had not been successful, it would have been shelved for many years".

Nag Ashwin recalled that "it was very difficult to get finance" as pre-production began during the Covid-induced lockdown. However, they had one saving grace. "Luckily, we had the biggest star cast of our country, so we had a little bit of savings. Also the previous films that we have done together have been successful, so there was goodwill on that front," he said.

Kalki 2898 AD is set in a dystopian future and revolves around four people - a pregnant woman named Sumati (Deepika Padukone), who is said to be giving birth to a child who is the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The immortal Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan) who is tasked with protecting the unborn child and Bhairava (Prabhas), a bounty hunter who could sell anyone in exchange for money.
