Renowned filmmaker Rono Mukherjee, uncle to Bollywood actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji, passed away on 28th May 2025. His death has left the entire Mukherjee family in deep sorrow. The emotional loss comes just two months after Ayan Mukerji’s father, veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, passed away in March this year.

Ayan Mukerji and Tanisha Mukerji Attend Funeral

Director Ayan Mukerji, best known for films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Brahmāstra, along with actress Tanisha Mukerji, was seen attending their uncle’s funeral in Mumbai. A video from the ceremony is currently going viral on social media, showing Ayan dressed in a white shirt and beige trousers, walking under an umbrella through the rain-soaked streets of Mumbai to reach the cremation site.

Tanisha, too, was dressed in a white traditional outfit as she paid her last respects. The sombre visuals reflected the depth of grief the family is going through.

Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who shares a familial connection with the Mukherjees, was also present. Ashutosh is married to Sunita Gowariker, daughter of Deb Mukherjee, making him Ayan’s brother-in-law. Just a few months earlier, in March 2025, Ayan Mukerji’s father and veteran actor Deb Mukherjee also passed away at the age of 83. A spokesperson for the family confirmed that Deb had been unwell for several months due to age-related ailments. He breathed his last on Friday, 14th March.

Deb Mukherjee starred in numerous iconic Bollywood films, including Aansu Ban Gaye Phool, Abhinetri, Do Ankhiyan, Baaton Baaton Mein, Kaminey, and Gudgudee. His passing was a huge loss for the Indian film fraternity.
