Shah Rukh Khan will be honored with 'Pardo alla Carriera'

At the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, Indian superstar and global icon Shah Rukh Khan will be honored with the festival's Career Achievement Award, the prestigious Pardo alla Carriera Ascona-Locarno Tourism. The award will pay tribute to his remarkable career in Indian cinema, which spans over 100 films across various genres.

Known in India as 'King Khan' - the Baadshah of Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan has become a unique symbol representing the vibrancy of Indian cinema. The actor will be presented with the award at Piazza Grande on the evening of Saturday, August 10. In addition, an important film in Khan's career - Devdas (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2002) - will be screened during the festival, and Shah Rukh will be present for a public talk at the Forum @Spazio Cinema on Sunday, August 11.

Many of Shah Rukh Khan's films are loved globally and this has made him an extremely popular name among audiences around the world, due to which he got the opportunity to represent his country and many of his films at many prestigious film festivals around the world.

Some of his most acclaimed and breakout films in his more than 30-year run in Indian cinema have been the romantic thriller Baazigar (1993), in which Khan played a murderous but sympathetic anti-hero on a quest for revenge. A few years later, he was elevated to superstar status with a romantic drama, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and a love story across timelines, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). At the same time, the enormity of this newfound fame did not stop Khan from playing roles that were different and way ahead of their time, such as Rahul in the Yash Chopra-directed romantic psychological thriller Darr (1993), a journalist who falls in love with a terrorist in the epic Dil Se... (1998) by Mani Ratnam. Over the next two decades, Khan's career would include high-profile collaborations with some of India's most prominent directors and stars, earning him tremendous international recognition as well. Khan was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007 and the Legion d'Honneur by the French government in 2014. Shah Rukh Khan's recent releases include three films released in 2023, Pathan (2023), Jawaan (2023), and Donkey (2023), all of which were huge commercial successes and received immense appreciation from global audiences. Jawaan (2023), produced by Khan's own production house Red Chillies Entertainment, has entered the history books as the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, confirming the actor's status as one of the most beloved Indian stars of his generation.

On Sunday, August 11, the public will have the chance to meet the actor during a panel conversation to be held at the Forum @Spazio cinema. Pardo alla carriera is made possible with the support of Ascona-Locarno Tourism, the destination partner of the Locarno Film Festival, whose task is to promote the development and promotion of tourism in the natural beauty surrounding Lake Maggiore and Locarno. Nestled between the lake and the mountains, Locarno serves as a breathtaking backdrop for its film festival, where the interplay of natural landscape and cultural celebration creates an immersive experience. Shah Rukh Khan Bio

Born in 1965 in New Delhi, Shah Rukh Khan has been one of the most recognizable faces of Bollywood for the past thirty years. Khan, who started out on television in the late 1980s, entered feature films with Deewana (1992) and over the next few years became a superstar in Indian cinema and a global icon by starring in musicals, crime films, historical dramas, and many other genres. In 2002, Khan founded his own production house, Red Chillies Entertainment, which remains a major player in the Hindi-language film industry. He has appeared in over 100 feature films and his many awards include 14 Filmfare Awards, the Padma Shri given by the Government of India the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and the Legion d'Honneur given by the French government. The 77th Locarno Film Festival will run from 7 to 17 August 2024.
