South Director Velu Prabhakaran Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

Velu Prabhakaran Death: Very sad news is coming from the Tamil industry. Tamil film producer, cinematographer and actor Velu Prabhakaran passed away on Friday, 18 July 2025 at a private hospital in Chennai. Velu Prabhakaran died at the age of 68. The director was ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment for the last few days. The death of the producer has sent a wave of mourning in the industry. 

Velu Prabhakaran's last rites will be performed on July 20

For your information, let us tell you that producer Velu Prabhakaran was admitted to the ICU in critical condition for the last few days. Velu Prabhakaran's body will be kept for public tributes at Valsaravakkam in Chennai from Saturday evening (July 19) to Sunday afternoon (July 20). There is a wave of mourning in the film industry since the news of Velu Prabhakaran's death. His last rites will be performed on Sunday evening at Porur crematorium in the presence of his close family and friends.

Film Career of Velu Prabhakaran

Velu Prabhakaran began his career as a cinematographer for the 1980 film Ivargal Vithyasamanvargal and then turned director with the 1989 film Naalaya Manithan. He made a sequel to the same film, Adhisaaya Manithan, in 1990. Velu Prabhakaran also tried his hand at making action films in the late 90s and early 2000s. Throughout his career, Velu Prabhakaran was known for making films that questioned the morality associated with the caste system. His 2004 film Kadhal Arangam, which was released in 2009 as Kadhal Kadhai, also ran into controversy with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over certain scenes and dialogues. Velu's last film as a director was the 2017 film Oru Iyakkunarin Kadhal Diary. His last film as an actor was the 2025 film Gajana.

The producer got married for the second time at the age of 60

Talking about the producer's personal life, Velu Prabhakaran was first married to actress-director P Jayadevi. In June 2017, at the age of 60, he married actress Shirley Das, who is half his age and has acted in his film Kadhal Kadhai.
