His demise occurred on Friday, March 14th (on the occasion of Holi) due to age-related health issues. Bollywood stars such as Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Kajol were present to bid him a final farewell. Deb Mukherjee’s career and personal life remain a significant part of Bollywood history, and he will always be remembered as a talented actor.
Film Career
Deb Mukherjee had a successful film career, with several hit films to his credit, including Tu Hi Meri Zindagi, Adhikar, Dalaal, Ek Baar Muskura Do, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Aansoo Bane Angaare, Havaan, Abhinetri, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar, King Uncle, and Kamine. In 1983, he also directed and produced the film Karate, starring Mithun Chakraborty, Kajal Kiran, and Yogita Bali. Over the years, he appeared in more than 20 films.
Did Not Want to Become an Actor
One of the interesting facts about Deb Mukherjee is that he never aspired to be an actor. He was studying in London when he visited India on a holiday, and his mother insisted he stay back. During this time, his elder brother, Rono Mukherjee, was making the film Tu Hi Meri Zindagi. The film, which released in 1965, was a blend of freedom and romance. In it, Deb Mukherjee shared screen space with Lata Sinha and Nivedita.

Deb Mukherjee had two marriages. His first wife, Manisha, gave birth to a daughter, Sunita, who is married to Ashutosh Gowariker. His second wife, Amrit, gave him a son, Ayan, who has become a well-known director in Bollywood.
Nephew of Kishore Kumar
Deb Mukherjee’s father, Sashadhar Mukherjee, was the owner of Filmalaya Studios and produced the 1960 film Love in Shimla. His mother, Sitadevi Mukherjee, was the sister of the legendary singers Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. This made Deb Mukherjee the nephew of the iconic singer Kishore Kumar.
Durga Puja Celebrations
Deb Mukherjee was also known for organizing the North Bombay Public Durga Puja Pandal for several years, which is considered one of the biggest Durga festivals in Mumbai. The event saw several stars from the film industry in attendance every year. This celebration was a significant part of his social contributions, and his efforts will always be remembered.
