Director Muzaffar Ali Praises Heeramandi: Rekha's film Umrao Jaan was screened in Mumbai on Thursday. Before its re-release in theatres, the makers of Umrao Jaan organised a special screening in Mumbai, which was attended by many stars. Today, on June 27, 2025, the iconic film "Umrao Jaan" directed by Muzaffar Ali is releasing in theatres once again. Recently, some viewers speculated that Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Umrao Jaan Screening) has taken inspiration from 'Umrao Jaan' for his series "Heeramandi". But 'Umrao Jaan' director Muzaffar Ali rejected such comparisons.

In fact, in an interview, Umrao Jaan's director Muzaffar Ali rejected such comparisons. Muzaffar Ali said that it is difficult to compare Umrao Jaan with Heeramandi. "I have seen an episode of Heeramandi. It is a different thing and a great effort. It has its own uniqueness, mine is different. It is very difficult to compare. It is also a great effort. My journey started with trunks and closets and cupboards; I have a different passion for clothes".

Muzaffar Ali praised 'Heeramandi'

Continuing his talk, Muzaffar Ali also commented on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's series 'Heeramandi'. He said that it is impressive but too opulent and grand for his taste. "Heeramandi is good but luxurious. It is too luxurious and rich. I would not do that. I would speak a different language".

Umrao Jaan was released in 1981 (Umrao Jaan Release on 1981) 

Umrao Jaan is a 1981 Indian period musical drama film directed by Muzaffar Ali and starring Rekha in the titular role. Based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa's 1899 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film tells the story of a Lucknow courtesan and poetess and her rise to fame. Upon release, the film received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for Ali's direction and Rekha's lead performance. Considered one of the best Indian films of all time, Umrao Jaan won several awards. At the 29th National Film Awards, it won 4 awards, including Best Actress (Rekha). It was also nominated for 3 Filmfare Awards, winning Best Director (Ali) and Best Music Director (Khayyam).
