The actor shared, "When Alia signed 2 States, there was a lot of hate and hatred against her on social media. This was because they said that she did not look like a South Indian, and her previous film Student of the Year did not give her the recognition that was needed to play the role, which was already established at that time, because many people had read the book."

Arjun Kapoor further claimed that several female actors were considered for the role but Alia passed her audition and performed well in the film. He said, "Alia just kept her head down and worked. I never heard her complain about anything on the set. She auditioned, she did a photo shoot and the same day they decided she was the right choice for the role". Arjun Kapoor further said that Alia shot for Highway and 2 States at the same time. Highway released before 2 States and everyone's perception changed in "just one Friday".
