Zoya Afroz on Her Role in ‘Taskaree’: “I Was Brought Up on Film Sets

Actress Zoya Afroz, who began her journey in the entertainment industry as a child artist, has evolved into a confident and mature performer over the years. Sharing screen space with a star like Emraan Hashmi and working under the direction of celebrated filmmaker Neeraj Pandey marks a significant milestone in her career. In a recent interaction, Zoya spoke candidly about the show’s success, her early days, experiences on set, and future aspirations. Here’s what she shares.

‘Taskaree: The Smugglers Web’ is currently global No. 1 on Netflix. How did you feel when you heard this news?

Honestly, it still hasn’t fully sunk in. It’s huge news. As an artist, you always dream that one day your work will be seen and appreciated across the world. When that actually happens, it’s difficult to put the emotions into words. I’m feeling happiness, gratitude, and a deep sense of fulfillment all at once.

You started working in the industry at a very young age. How was the journey from being a child artist to a lead actress?

When you’re a child, responsibilities are minimal. On set, you simply do your work, and everyone showers you with love. But when you grow up and take on lead roles, the responsibility multiplies. You need to understand the character’s emotions, journey, and the entire narrative. That transition is quite significant.

Did you ever consider any other career option? A Plan B?

No, there has never been a Plan B for me. This is my life. I was brought up on film sets. I often say that when the last day of my life comes, I want it to be on a set as well.

Before working with Emraan Hashmi in ‘Taskaree’, did you have any preconceived notions?

People had told me that he could be a little intimidating, but that impression vanished on the very first day. He is extremely grounded, a true gentleman, and highly professional. On set, he always makes his co-actors feel comfortable.

How was your experience working with director Neeraj Pandey?

Working with a director like Neeraj Pandey is the biggest validation any actor can receive. His characters don’t just exist within the story—they drive it forward. Priya is a strong, layered, and deeply human character. I feel grateful that he trusted me with such a role.

Do you enjoy working in web series more than films

Web series offer the space to explore a story in depth. With multiple episodes, a character can be developed in great detail. As an actor, the format matters less to me than the strength of the character.

Which directors are on your wish list?

I would love to work with Neeraj Pandey again. Apart from him, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Zoya Akhtar, and Shoojit Sircar are also on my wish list.

Is there any childhood memory that is still very close to your heart?

During my very first film, we were shooting a song sequence, and I was quite young at the time. Saif Ali Khan and Karisma Kapoor taught us the choreography with so much love and patience. That moment remains extremely special to me even today.
