'Makar Sankranti' masst manoranjan!
Acclaimed actor-debut director Subodh Bhave proved his brilliant caliber in his previous landmark epic musical-drama movie ‘Katyar Kalljat Ghusali’ ( 2015). This time multi-talented Subodh is back with a musical bang, with his yet another spectacular Marathi ‘period’ movie Jio Studios ‘Sangeet Manapmaan, which released last Friday, is produced by dynamic Jyoti Deshpande (Jio Studios) and enterprising Sunil Phadtare. With its melodious music, soul-stirring romantic emotions of a romantic-triangle which has to face friction and altercations caused by misunderstanding, jealousy, ego-clashes, and self-esteem. The visual ‘period’ grandeur, awesome vibrant costumes, authentic sets and locations, realistic combat-fights and dare-devilry makes ‘Sangeet Manapmaan’, a compelling must-watch for cosmopolitan audiences in nearby cinema theatres. This is, even if cannot follow or understand impactful Marathi dialogues. (This movie also has English sub-titles for the non-Marathi audiences.)
Historically, Hollywood has been known for its iconic yesteryear Western musical movies like The Sound of Music (1965) and also Fiddler on the Roof (1971) which were also inspired by grand stage-drama-plays. Golden-era Hollywood history is often lauded for its iconic yesteryear Western musical movies like The Sound of Music (1965) and also Fiddler on the Roof (1971) which were also inspired by grand stage-drama-plays. In India ‘Sangeet Manapmaan (2025) is yet another rare golden opportunity especially for Marathi and non-Marathi audiences who wish to enjoy opulent yet engaging musical romantic-warrior dramas grandeur on the big screen. Rustic yet rugged shepherd Dhairyadhar ( Subodh Bhave) from Sangrampur village, whose dream is to join the kingdom-army, attains instant prominence with his dare-devil rescue deed and wins the hand of the aristocratic stunningly beautiful Bhamini ( Vaidehi Parshurami) However, Bhamini, is influenced by her scheming ambitious lover-boy, the deputy-army-commander Chandravilas (Sumeet Raghavan) who deceitfully ‘poisons’ her mind, and she curtly rejects the proposal out of egoistic pride and misunderstanding.
Later, adventurous royal Bhamini disguises herself as a ‘poor yet charming girl Vanmala’ and ventures on a self-discovery journey into the warrior-zone of Dhaiyadhar. along with a friendly female aide (Archana Nipankar). Also, her mission is to discreetly probe into the secret ( ambitious) motives of Dhairyadhar As she realizes Dhairyadhar's loyalty to her Army Chief Commander father Kakasaheb ( Shailesh Datar) and his altruistic selfless acts, the startling reality dispels her biased prejudice. A fierce clash of ambition, love, loyalty- duty unfolds as Chandravilas manipulates and plots to seize power and destroy Dhairyadhar. Despite its minor flaws and a rather-lengthy script, overall, the filmy-content grips the audiences. With its slick action-warrior close-combat moments, soft mushy romance, and intrigue-suspense situations. It’s a fantastic treat to watch how the true-dual-identity-crisis of a lead character gets unraveled, in the pre-climax followed by kahani-mein-twists-jolts.
Almost all screen-performances of the entire cast are authentic and impactful, under lead actor Subodh Bhave’s sterling direction! What stands apart besides technical excellence, in ‘Sangeet Manapmaan’ is the amazing alternating character ‘get-ups’ and demeanor of Dhairyadhar ( Subodh) as the shepherd and then as commanding warrior. And the contrasting demeanor and costumes of the stunningly beautiful actress Vaidehi as the royal, arrogant ‘Bhamini’ who transforms into the docile yet gutsy village-belle Vanmala.
