Sixer Season 2 MX Player release fails to impress
In 2020, Arunabh Kumar and Chandan Kumar brought the TVF series Panchayat, portraying rural life, politics, and its challenges. The show was so realistic that audiences fell in love with it. Over time, it ran for three successful seasons. However, the duo parted ways after the success went to their heads. Arunabh Kumar continued with Panchayat Season 4, but with new writers and directors, the season didn’t replicate the previous success. This indicates that after the original partnership ended, Arunabh Kumar hasn’t been able to deliver the same magic.
In 2022, TVF also launched a hard-hitting series called Sixer, which depicted life close to the ground. Now, TVF, under Arunabh Kumar, brings its sequel, Sixer Season 2, but this series feels completely fragmented. While narrating an underdog story, the writers and director appear confused. Nonetheless, the five-episode, approximately four-hour web series started streaming on MX Player from 24 September.
Sixer Season 2 Story blends cricket with politics
The story begins on a cricket field in Indore, where a crucial match is underway. One player tells his teammate Nikku, also called Dystair (Shivankit Singh Parihar), that they must deliberately lose the match; otherwise, caste-related conflicts could turn violent. Nikku scans the field to find people with sticks threatening him. Yet, compelled by his habit of scoring sixes, Nikku continues to bat skillfully. After winning the match, supporters of the rival team rush to the field, but Nikku stands fearless. It turns out that two days prior, Nikku had secured protection from Nageshwar, aka Nagu Bhai, a local politician running for municipal elections.
The story moves through various events: Nagu Bhai’s interference in cricket, the formation of a new cricket team, Gargi (Karishma Singh), a tennis player who also plays cricket, the bully coach Khan, and the exclusion of star player Sanjay Soni from the team. Eventually, Nikku succeeds in both cricket and Nageshwar’s election. Gargi’s character is underutilized and swings back and forth without much depth.
Sixer Season 2 Review: TVF sequel lacks sharpness
Arunabh Kumar’s grasp over content seems weaker than before. TVF appears to function like a factory, producing web series without sufficient focus on creativity. The sharpness and satirical edge that Sixer had three years ago are missing in Sixer Season 2. Central character Nikku has developed, along with his personal struggles, but overall the story feels messy. While the first season included notable references to Bhismasur, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu, the second season includes implausible elements such as demons arriving in a Pushpak Viman after Lanka’s conquest, which feels forced. Though there are many characters, several are underwritten. The sequence of events leading to the rebel village in Bundelkhand seems strange, and the way Nikku accepts ransom during a kidnapping is unconvincing. The series lacks the depth expected, despite the well-known cricket-politics nexus.
However, the series does delve into the dynamics between Nikku and his former rival Shanu, and explores emotional conflicts within their friend circle.
Sixer Season 2 Cast: Shivankit Singh Parihar shines
The series has a large ensemble cast. Most actors perform decently. Shivankit Singh Parihar stands out in the role of Nikku, drawing attention with his performance. He is also one of the writers, collaborating with others. Karishma Singh, as Gargi, also impresses and creates anticipation.
Sixer Season 2 Cinematography adds visual appeal
The camerawork is commendable, adding visual appeal to the otherwise weak storyline.
Overall, Sixer Season 2 has its moments, mainly through character interactions, but it fails to capture the sharpness, coherence, and punch of the original season.
