Bipasha Basu was born on January 7, 1979, to a Bengali family. Her father, Hirak Basu, is a civil engineer, and her mother, Mamta Basu, is a homemaker. She has an elder sister, Bidisha, and a younger sister, Vijayeta. According to Bipasha, her name means "deep, dark, desire." In Delhi, she lived in Pamposh Enclave, Nehru Place, until the age of eight and attended Apeejay School. Her family then moved to Kolkata, where she attended Bhavans Gangabux Kanoria Vidyalaya, Bidhannagar. She became head girl at school and was affectionately called "Lady Goonda" for her assertive yet bubbly personality.

Modeling career

Everyone knows that Bipasha was a supermodel before entering films. But few people know that Arjun Rampal's ex-wife, Mehr Jessia, advised Bipasha to pursue modeling. In an interview, Bipasha Basu said that she and Mehr met at a hotel in Kolkata. It was then that Mehr advised Bipasha to pursue a career in modeling. Actor Vinod Khanna, who judged the competition, wanted to cast her opposite his son, Akshaye Khanna, in the film Himalaya Putra (1997), but Bipasha turned down the offer, believing herself too young at the time. She later appeared in a Calida advertisement with her then-boyfriend, Dino Morea, which sparked controversy due to its bold content. The advertisement even led to protests outside her home.

Bipasha, speaking about her struggles, said, "When I returned to India from the United States, my organizers put me up in an apartment in Kalinga Colony, a truck drivers' colony. She explained, "I was very scared there. I would leave home early in the morning. I always carried a hammer with me. However, I never needed to use it." Bipasha said, "I remember an incident when I was returning home late at night after a fashion show. Some thugs chased my car. The cab driver immediately accelerated and dodged them. Pagers were common in those days. The driver called my PG owner, who then took me home. A few days after this incident, I moved into an apartment in Breach Candy."
