Movie Review: Kaagar (Marathi)

Kaagar is topical film set in a village with a political backdrop. The story plays out in a small town called Virainagar in the sugar belt of Maharashtra, against the backdrop of a political conflict between a senior MLA Aabasaheb (Palshikar) and a young leader Bhayyaraje (Shantanu Gangane). Guruji (Shende) is a cunning political leader who has shifted his loyalties from the senior MLA Aabasaheb to the young leader Bhaiyaraje and the speculations about the changing sociopolitical scenario are rampant. Though Guruji’s daughter Rani (Rinku Rajguru) is least interested in joining politics, she is in love with Guruji’s right hand Yuvaraj (Tawade).

Movie Review: Tarpan

It is an adaptation of Shivmurti’s Tarpan by filmmaker Neelam R Singh and revolves around the story of Rajpatiya (Neelam) a young lower caste girl who accidently enters a sugarcane field owned by the family of upper caste Chandar (Abhishek Madarecha). Rajpatiya enters on the pretext of tasting some sugarcane but Chandar spots her and decides to teach her and her community a lesson. He forces himself upon her and attempts to molest her.

Movie Review: Kalank

Kalank is a sugar coated saga on pre-Partition rumblings between Hindus and Muslims in fictional Husnabad near Lahore and abounds with illegitimate sons, dutiful daughters, tawaaifs and kothewalis, all wrapped in love and betrayal and revenge. It is a complex love story set during India’s Partition era, where the young Roop (Alia Bhatt) is torn between respect for husband Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur) and her newfound love for Zafar (Varun Dhawan). While their back stories and heart-breaking love saga unfolds, there is a lot of melodrama in store for the poor viewers in this arduous journey of 169 minutes.

Movie Review: Betiyon Ki Balle Balle 

It is a tacky slow-moving social drama that sets out to delve into the pertinent issues which even today plague the cause of woman empowerment,  and serve as a roadblock for several women in our country. The film deals with two parallel stories, one a college girl who is trapped by a self confessed Romeo who rapes her and tries o blackmail her with the help of a female and the other track of a army man who loses his wife and only daughter when hooligans try to rape them in his absence and they commit suicide. The two stories are linked by the arrival of the protagonist (Jeet Upendra) in the interval, who decides to get justice for the rape victim by fighting for her in the court.
