It was 1952. A tall, well-built, shy young man from Punjab had come to Mumbai for the first time. His name was Dharmendra. At that time, he was in his second year of college. Although he was very fond of watching movies and his favorite actor was Dilip Kumar, he didn't have any such big dream of becoming a hero in films. He simply had one wish: to see his idol, his hero, Dilip Kumar, in person. After watching the film "Shaheed" (1948), he felt that if he could meet Dilip Kumar even once, he would surely make him his brother.

So Dharmendra somehow managed to find Dilip Kumar's address and one day arrived at the gate of the legend's bungalow in Pali Hill, Mumbai. That day, Dharmendra was lucky that no guard was there at the gate. Dharmendra thought that perhaps the customs here would be similar to those in Punjab. This was the era when, in Punjab, everyone's houses remained open the whole day. Anyone could enter anyone's house without knocking. Thinking about this, Dharam Ji opened the gate and went straight inside. He saw a staircase in front of him, climbed up quickly, and the room he entered... was Dilip Kumar's bedroom. Dilip Sahab was fast asleep. As Dharmendra stepped into the room, he bumped into something.

Dilip Saheb was suddenly awakened by the noise, and he saw a completely unfamiliar, well-built young man staring at him. He was startled and angrily exclaimed, "Who?" Hearing this, Dharmendra was completely taken aback. He ran out of the room in fear… went downstairs, crossed the road, and sat down in a small cafe. He just wanted to hide. Sitting there, sipping lassi, he kept thinking about what he had done.

But fate had something else in store, something that would later become a strong bond in their relationship. The young boy (Dharmendra) who had run away in fear didn't know that one day Dilip Sahib himself would embrace him and bless him, and also one day he would become like an elder brother to him.
Six years after that awkward encounter with Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra's life suddenly took a beautiful turn.

Dharmendra won the United Producers and Filmfare Talent Contest. He moved to Mumbai and started working in films. As fate would have it, the makeup woman who used to get him ready was Dilip Sahib's sister, Farida. As soon as Dharmendra learned this, he immediately requested her to introduce him to Dilip Kumar. Farida arranged an appointment. The next day, Dharam Ji arrived at Dilip Sahib's house, and this time he was welcomed with an embrace by Dilip Kumar himself.

Dilip Sahib took Dharmendra to his lawn. They both sat down there . Dharmendra told him about his struggles, and Dilip Kumar also shared stories of his early days. Dharmendra listened quietly like a child. They had tea and snacks. By then evening had fallen. It was the winter season, and Dharmendra was wearing a thin shirt. Dilip Kumar noticed that Dharmendra was shivering a little.
After some time when Dharmendra got up and asked permission to leave, Dilip Sahib took him to his room, opened his wardrobe, pulled out a nice sweater and handed it to Dharmendra, saying " Take this, how will you bear the cold in such a thin cotton shirt?" Dharmendra was overjoyed. He hugged the sweater lovingly and left.

For Dharmendra, this wasn't just a necessary gift – it was the first brick of foundation laid in their relationship. After this, their bond grew stronger day by day. Dilip Kumar had said in several interviews that he saw his young true, innocent self reflection of youth in him, but also wondered why God hadn't made him as handsome as Dharmendra. On the other hand, Dharmendra used to say that if there is anyone who is a hero in the true sense , it is only and only Dilip Kumar. His style, his manners, his sophistication—everything is worth learning from."
