Today the Bollywood industry is changing in many ways that are different from the past. The rise of AI has taken away some of the deep stories and emotional content that used to be a big part of entertainment. It has also started to make art and creativity feel more mechanical. This shift in how actors work is worrying and could lead Bollywood into an uncertain future. You can especially see this change in the younger generation of actors. This transformation seems to have begun with the introduction of new technology social media and global performances in the entertainment world. But is this really the kind of progress that will help Indian cinema especially Bollywood reach a global audience?
Bollywood's Young Stars Lack Dedication of Legendary Icons?
When we look at today’s younger stars in Bollywood it appears that many of them are forgetting the hard work and discipline that defined the stars of earlier times. Legendary actors and actresses like Dilip Kumar Madhubala Meena Kumari Nargis Vyjayanthimala Sadhana Nanda Mala Sinha Waheeda Rehman Raj Kapoor Dev Anand Rajendra Kumar Rajkumar Amitabh Bachchan Rekha Sridevi Madhuri Dixit Shah Rukh Khan Aamir Khan Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar were known for their strong dedication to their craft.
They did hard work, read their scripts in detail, dedicatedly went through their rehearsals, and were most sincere in preparing for roles. Without modern amenities like Google or social networking, these legends rose to be in cinema history forever.
In contrast with older times, glamour seems to be synonymous with Bollywood today. Young actors of the present generation believe in being attractive on-screen and flaunting it on social media rather than working hard on their craft. This rather irresponsible attitude towards acting has eroded dramatically the credibility and depth of performances in far too many films. Having said that, this really cannot be said for a few-actors like Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani, Ranveer Singh, Tripti Dimri, and Rashmika Mandanna are exception to the rule of hard work and dedication.
And yet-the new generation which scarcely seems to take the craft seriously is raising questions about themselves.
Bollywood Legends & Their Unmatched Dedication to Craft
There were stars in bygone decades for whom acting was a skill to be respected and worked upon. Hours on end would be spent by the stars merging with their characters, with an obsession bordering on overkill. Dilip Kumar spent months studying the psyche of the character he was to play in 'Devdas'; Amitabh Bachchan rehearsed for days for one of the most powerful monologues in 'Deewaar'. And some of the greats like Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Rekha, Sridevi, or even recently Madhuri Dixit would practice their dance or dialogue delivery for weeks. Another example of hard work and discipline is Akshay Kumar. Akshay shows extreme punctuality and tremendous work discipline, ensuring that not one minute is wasted on set. All these actors believed in practiced manual preparation.
These days, the current crop of young actors often feel instantly attracted to immediate publicity and the recognition afforded by social media, just like instant coffee. These younger generations prefer the development of their online presence rather than the development of their craft. Physical fitness and good looks may be good for the image of the actor, but can they substitute real talent or hard work?
Bollywood Can Learn Discipline from the South Film Industry
The South Indian film industry is the exact opposite of such trends. The stars there work within a highly disciplined framework, where producers are personally involved on set. Bounded Scripts are given to the artist and talked about before shooting begins, and actors dedicate themselves completely to their roles. There is so much the Bollywood industry can learn from this organized hard work.
Yet, to generalize all young Bollywood actors in one hue would be unjust. There are many actors who do not shrink from putting in the hours and working hard . In 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', Alia Bhatt immersed herself utterly and thoroughly into this role, which was no less than a challenge. Vicky Kaushal, with his lock-in training for 'Chhawa', has proven to be an equally committed professional. Bollywood can only move forward when these two factors coalesce, engaged narratives and disciplined actors respectful of their craft.
Hard Work Over Hype: A Lesson for Young Bollywood Stars
Young actors should realize that celebrity status attained through easy paths will always be short-lived while that gained through labor will stand the test of time. Producers and directors should also stand by making investments, including time and resources, to create an environment conducive to nurturing creativity.
But here is something more. Bollywood is capable of churning out great films with spectacular performances encased in original thoughts. However, it takes the combined effort of all. Actors must respect their roles, directors must throw away their shackles, writers must write stories that matter, and producers must choose quality over quick returns, then, Bollywood may regain its status as one of the most reputable film industries in the world.
