The film was released on 25 December 2008 and played a game changer for the Bollywood film industry. It also made several box office records and emerged as one of the highest grossing Indian films of that time. Ghajini started a trend where many fans began adopting ‘Ghajini cuts’ inspired by the unique hairstyle of Aamir’s character in the film.

Over time Ghajini became popular and also was criticised for its resemblance to Christopher Nolan's 'Memento'. Though the two films ultimately touch on themes of memory loss and revenge, Aamir Khan made it clear when discussing Ghajini that it was inspired by the Tamil version, rather than Memento. The difference of this helped to secure Ghajini as an original work.

While Ghajini’s massive box office collections certainly had a considerable impact, the film went on to inspire filmmakers across India to experiment with unconventional stories with complex plots and characters with deep emotional resonance. Many actors and directors took a chance with the storytelling style after the success of the film.
