Recently, the Government of India made a courageous decision to ban 25 apps and websites that were allegedly spreading obscene and inappropriate content. Among these were several OTT platforms like ULLU, ALTT, DesiFlix, NeonX VIP, and Big Shots that were found broadcasting objectionable material, violating social and moral values. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting invoked Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, 2000, Section 294 of the IPC, and The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 to justify the ban.

Ekta Kapoor और उनकी मां शोभा के खिलाफ POCSO एक्ट के तहत केस दर्ज, 'गंदी बात' के चलते फंसी मुश्किल में - Case filed against Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor

A surprising aspect is the mention of film producer Ekta Kapoor and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, who were allegedly associated with ULLU and ALTT. In response, Ekta Kapoor issued a public statement denying any current ties, stating that both she and her mother severed all relations with ALTT in June 2021.

गंदी बात वेब सीरीज में नाबालिग के अश्लील सीन्स', प्रोड्यूसर एकता कपूर और शोभा कपूर मुश्किल में फंसे - gandi baat web series vulgur scenes of minor girls complaint filed ...

Notably, their company launched ALTBalaji in 2017, which hosted both mainstream long-format web series and bold, controversial content like “XXX” and “Gandii Baat,” which frequently faced legal challenges.

Kangana and Ravi Kishan Welcome the Move

BJP MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut openly praised the government’s decision, calling it a much-needed step for the welfare of society. Ravi Kishan, actor and MP from Gorakhpur, also supported the move, calling it justified.
In addition, Mukesh Khanna, once hailed as India's first Superman, commented that senior stars like Amitabh Bachchan should also speak up and praised the government's bold action. But the question remains: Why are the rest of Bollywood’s influential voices silent on this issue?

Where Are the Voices of Bollywood's “Role Models”?

Whenever a social issue arises, the public turns to their idols for guidance. That’s why it's worth asking—
Why is Amitabh Bachchan, the voice behind countless social campaigns, silent now? Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan—actors whose influence extends beyond cinema—why are they not speaking out? Anupam Kher, usually vocal on national matters, is also silent. Javed Akhtar, who often speaks on freedom of expression and social causes, has not commented this time. Jaya Bachchan, known to passionately defend the film industry in Parliament, hasn’t acknowledged this issue either.

Akshay Kumar, Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgn

Similarly, Akshay Kumar, a face of public health and hygiene campaigns, remains quiet. Sunny Deol, a Member of Parliament with a “fighter for truth” image—what does he think? Ajay Devgn, who frequently produces films on nationalism and social themes, does this issue not concern him?

Do These Stars Speak Only When It Suits Them?

Do they only raise their voices when an issue affects their personal image or interests? Do they bear no responsibility for the rise of vulgar content in society?

Is This Silence a Betrayal of Their Audience?

When a film is banned, the industry quickly cries out for freedom of expression. But when the government acts against content that damages the moral fabric of society, the same industry goes quiet. Isn’t that hypocrisy? These stars charge crores for endorsements, deliver grand speeches at award shows, and preach about social responsibility. But when real change is at stake, their voices disappear.

Government Bans 25 OTT Platforms Including Ullu, ALTT, For Violating Content Laws

Is It Only the Government’s Responsibility?

India is a young nation, and its youth are most influenced by digital media. The content they consume shapes the future of society. If the biggest names in cinema remain silent, are they not—knowingly or unknowingly—complicit in this cultural decline?

The Government Has Acted Boldly—Now It’s Time for Bollywood to Act Responsibly

The government has shown courage. Now it’s time for responsible voices in Bollywood to speak up. Kangana Ranaut, Mukesh Khanna, and Ravi Kishan have taken the first step. The rest must follow. Because if you’re a role model, even your silence sends a message—and sometimes, that message can be deeply disappointing.
