Holi Market Trend: ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Border 2’ Water Guns, Along with Modi and Trump Faces, Hit the Stalls

With the changing colors of festivals, the style of celebration is also evolving. There was a time when, as children, we played Holi with simple bamboo water guns. Today, kids use rocket-shaped pichkaris that spray water directly from large tubs.

As Holi approaches, the market demand for pichkaris has surged. A trader revealed that this year, water guns themed around films like Dhurandhar and Border 2 are in demand. At the same time, some pichkaris in the market feature the smiling face of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while others carry the face of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Whether it is the famous Lathmar Holi of Barsana or the vibrant Holi celebrations of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. With Ramadan ongoing, Eid approaching, and the wedding season underway, the festive atmosphere has begun early this year. Markets are filled with colorful pichkaris, gulal, caps, kurtas, sandalwood, khoya, and ingredients for sweets like malpua.

Retailers say that items featuring Prime Minister Modi are selling the most. In Mumbai’s Malad West, a shopkeeper explained that whenever a film becomes a hit, merchandise inspired by it floods the market. This Holi, along with film-themed products, pichkaris and color packets featuring Modi and Trump are also selling briskly. Modi-style Gujarati caps are priced at ₹50, while Modi masks cost up to ₹200.

Traders across Mumbai and other cities report that Modi-themed pichkaris, caps, kurtas, T-shirts, and masks are in highest demand. Instead of film star merchandise, buyers—both children and adults—are asking for Modi- and Yogi-themed items, referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

It appears that Holi celebrations have entered a new phase, where political themes are overshadowing film-inspired trends. A similar trend is visible in music. Bhojpuri artists have released numerous Holi songs on YouTube, many praising Modi and Yogi. Singer-actor Dinesh Lal Yadav (Nirahua) has several Holi-themed folk songs, Ravi Kishan has released an audio track featuring the slogan “Har Har Mahadev,” and Manoj Tiwari has sung devotional Holi songs aimed at voters in Delhi.
