A Discovery of Guru Dutt Who Became an Evergreen Actress
Born on April 22, 1934, in Sheikhpura, Bihar, Zaibunnissa—known to the world as Kumkum—was discovered by the legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt. For his film Aar-Paar (1954), Guru Dutt was looking for a fresh female face for the song "Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar", and that's where Kumkum’s cinematic journey began. That brief song performance gained her recognition in the industry and led to roles in classic films like Pyaasa and Mr. & Mrs. 55.
A Shining Star of the 1950s
Kumkum acted in over 115 films in her career. She featured in iconic films like Mother India, Naya Daur, Kohinoor, Mr. X in Bombay, Son of India, Ujala, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Lalkar, Raja Aur Runk, Geet, Ganga Ki Lehren, Aankhen, Shriman Funtoosh, Ek Sapera Ek Lutera, Basant Bahar, Ek Kunwara Ek Kunwari, Jalte Badan, and King Kong. She was among the rare actresses of her era who performed powerful supporting roles with both dignity and depth.
The First Heroine of Bhojpuri Cinema
Kumkum played a pioneering role in Bhojpuri cinema as well. She was the lead actress in the first-ever Bhojpuri film, Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1963), which is still considered a classic.
Dharmendra’s First Leading Lady
In 1960, when Dharmendra made his acting debut with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Kumkum played the lead opposite him. By then, she was already an established and respected name in the industry. In an emotional interview, Dharmendra once said, “Kumkum ji supported me immensely during my early days. I learned from her how to be humble and kind to newcomers. I will never forget how gracious and warm she was toward me. She made me feel at home, spoke to me about my family, took an interest in my life, and helped me through my shots. I will always remain indebted to her.”
A Graceful Goodbye to Cinema
After a glowing career, Kumkum bid farewell to the film industry in 1975 when she married Sajjad Akbar Khan from Lucknow. She chose to lead a simple, quiet life away from the limelight.
Considered Govinda Her Son
Even after stepping away from the film world, Kumkum maintained a strong bond with actor Govinda, whom she considered her son. In fact, Govinda’s mother, Nirmala Devi, was Kumkum’s stepsister. This familial tie nurtured a deep and affectionate relationship between the two.
Kumkum ji was a living example of simplicity, artistry, and grace. The entire Mayapuri family pays heartfelt tribute to this priceless gem of Hindi cinema. Your smile and the brilliance of your performances will forever live on the silver screen.
