Meezaan Jafri of ‘De De Pyaar De 2’ Says Kartik Aaryan Is His Biggest Motivation

How was your journey from your first step to the silver screen? When did you decide you wanted to become an actor?

I never thought acting would be my career. As a child, I was entirely focused on sports. Later, I went to the U.S. to study business, but soon realized it wasn’t for me. That’s when I gathered the courage to tell my father I wanted to enter films. He told me clearly — “Acting can’t be taught. It must be felt. Practice and observation are the real teachers.”
So I studied direction and editing, which gave me an understanding of the craft behind the camera. Gradually, opportunities opened up, and finally, Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir gave me my dream debut.

After signing the film, how were your look tests conducted? How did you finalize your character’s appearance?

I got an unexpected call from Luv sir one day when I was in London. He simply said, “De De Pyaar De 2 is your film. Play on the front foot.” When I returned to India, we did three look tests—long hair or short, what kind of beard—everything was finalized. After that, we went straight to shoot.

How was your experience working with your father Javed Jaffrey on set? Was it difficult to balance being a son and being a co-actor?

For me, it was easy to balance, but Dad couldn’t always switch off his instinct as a father. He would constantly give inputs. Sometimes the director would give one brief and Dad would say something else. But it helped me a lot—he elevated my performance and made me focus on tiny details. Having him around was always like having a strong support system.

Were there any fun improvisations during the shoot that were not originally in the script?

There were many improvisations. For example, in the climax, Dad suddenly added “Sadda haq, etthe rakh.” Ajay sir caught it instantly, and the scene became even funnier. Moments like these brought real energy to the set.

What lessons did you learn from Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan that you’ll always remember?

Ajay sir’s precision amazed me. There was a simple action mark—he hit it with such accuracy that I was stunned. That’s the result of years of experience. With Madhavan sir, I had an emotional scene that needed a very real tone. He came to me and said, “You need to break in this scene.” For 15 minutes, he rehearsed with me—where to pause, where to smile, where to hold. He transformed the entire performance.

Among your contemporaries, which actor motivates you the most?

Kartik Aaryan . He understood the system, understood the audience, and built everything on his own. Growing without backing in this industry is tough, but he has done exceptionally well. Like him, I’ve never stopped working. As long as I keep working, the audience will keep knowing me.

What upcoming projects will we see you in?

I’m working on a web show for OTT. Apart from that, I have two feature films lined up. Can’t reveal much right now, but some very exciting things are coming.
