The fourth season of the web series Panchayat is all set to release soon on an OTT platform. The previous three seasons received overwhelming love from the audience, and ever since the trailer of Season 4 dropped, it has been trending. In this context, the cast and creators of Panchayat recently engaged in a special interaction.
Panchayat Season 4 Team Talks Hind Ka Sitara
This conversation featured key members of the show—Neena Gupta, Jitendra Kumar, Sunita Rajwar, Ashok Pathak, Faisal Malik, director Deepak Kumar Mishra, and co-director Santoshī. The core team opened up about the emotional responses, challenges faced during Season 4, and the popularity of the song Hind Ka Sitara.
- Did all of you audition for ‘Panchayat’?
Sunita: Yes, I did audition. Who knows me well enough to offer roles without one! But when I heard Neena ji was also offered a part, I thought I’d lose this role. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, and both of us became part of the series.
Faisal Malik & Ashok Pathak: Yes, we auditioned as well.
- Have you ever been removed from a film or series after being finalized?
Neena: Yes, in a very old film. I was finalized for a role but later replaced. The role eventually went to Tanuja.
- You portray each character so convincingly. I have to ask—did you wear a bodysuit for ‘Panchayat’, or is it just brilliant acting?
Neena: It’s all acting. For me, costume matters the most. When I wear a saree, it transforms me into the character. The body language, attitude—everything adapts to it. If the costume is wrong, the entire character can fall apart. That’s why I always ensure that what I wear perfectly suits the role.
- Both of you—Neena ji and Sunita ji—are National School of Drama alumni. Any memorable stories you’d like to share?
Sunita: When I first moved to Mumbai after graduating from NSD, I worked backstage in a play titled From the Last Ray of the Sun to the First Ray. Neena ji and Rajendra Gupta ji were in that production. Initially, I only worked backstage, but later I got a small role too. No one paid for such work back then, but Neena ji gave me a fee—with respect. That was a big deal at the time. I have respected her deeply ever since.
- Neena ji, you once posted on social media asking for work. Do you still do that? And do the others follow this approach?
Neena: Yes, I still send such messages. You have to—otherwise, how will you get work?
Jitendra: Yes, it happens. But I don’t usually send messages.
Faisal Malik: I do—almost every day. I send out many messages to keep the work coming.
- Secretary ji—Jitendra Kumar—have you contributed creatively beyond acting?
Jitendra: No, my sole focus is acting. Each new season is a fresh challenge for me. I try to learn from past mistakes and portray the character better. This journey of evolving with the role is the most thrilling part for me.
- In Season 3, your character really moved people. What kind of responses did you receive?
Faisal Malik: Extremely emotional ones. People send long messages on social media. Some say, “This happened with my father too,” or “You made me cry, this was too much.” Sometimes, it feels like this show isn’t fiction but real life. That emotional connection with the audience is the biggest reward.
- What has been the biggest reason behind the show's four-season success?
Neena: The script and writing. The stronger the characters were written, the more powerful their impact.
Deepak: The cast breathed life into every role. The story moves at a slow pace, but each character has a clear graph. Viewers begin to relate to them. That’s what makes Panchayat stand out.
- At the end of Seasons 1, 2, and 3, we always wondered—what next? How did you decide on the main hook for Season 4?
Deepak: The biggest hook was the panchayat elections. That’s where the story naturally progressed. Whether it was Abhishek giving his exam or the Pradhan getting shot—these were all turning points in that arc. These events kept the audience invested.
- What challenges did you face while directing Season 4?
Deepak: The responsibility was greater this time. Thankfully, the cast and crew supported me wholeheartedly. I even took input from the actors on how to improve certain scenes. They were always collaborative and creative. That’s what made Season 4 so strong.
Just so you know—Panchayat Season 4 premieres on June 24 on Prime Video.
