“Main apni Jhansi nahi doongi!”– These powerful words were not just a declaration, but the ignition of India’s freedom movement, led by the valiant warrior queen Rani Lakshmi Bai. Born on November 19, 1828, in Kashi (Varanasi), Manikarnika grew up to become the Queen of Jhansi and a symbol of resistance. When the British tried to annex Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse, she fiercely opposed them and went on to become a key figure in the Revolt of 1857.
Today, on June 18, the day she was martyred in 1858, the entire nation bows in reverence to her. On this occasion, let’s take a look at some major films and TV series that have brought her extraordinary courage and sacrifice to life on screen.
Jhansi Ki Rani (1953) – Directed by Sohrab Modi
This historical film was directed by actor-producer Sohrab Modi and is considered India’s first Technicolor film. Rani Lakshmi Bai was portrayed by his wife Mehtab, while Modi himself played the role of Rajguru, the royal advisor to the queen. The film was later released in English as The Tiger and the Flame (1956).
Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)
Starring and co-directed by Kangana Ranaut, this film portrayed the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai on a grand cinematic scale. The story was penned by Baahubali fame writer K.V. Vijayendra Prasad. Released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, the film was screened in over 50 countries and received international acclaim.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019)
This Telugu film, based on one of India’s early freedom fighters, featured Anushka Shetty (Sweety Shetty) in the role of Rani Lakshmi Bai. The movie was dubbed in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. It was a tribute to India’s unsung heroes of history.
The Warrior Queen of Jhansi (2019)
This British-Indian film depicted the 1857 revolt from an international perspective. Written by and starring Devika Bhise, the film aimed to present the valor of Rani Lakshmi Bai to global audiences in a Hollywood-style format.
Ek Veer Stree Ki Kahaani – Jhansi Ki Rani – Zee TV (2009–2011)
This historical TV series brought the story of Rani Lakshmi Bai into Indian households. Ulka Gupta portrayed the young queen, while Kratika Sengar played her in adulthood. The show served as a milestone in connecting younger audiences with the heroic tale of Jhansi’s queen.
Khoob Ladi Mardani – Jhansi Ki Rani – Colors TV (2019)
In this show, actress Anushka Sen portrayed Rani Lakshmi Bai. The series aimed to introduce a new generation to the courage, strategy, and sacrifice of the legendary warrior queen.
