Surender Sharma — a name synonymous with Hindi poetry and humor — recently turned 80. Known for his signature wit and bold sarcasm, Sharma rose to fame with his clever “Chaar Laina” verses capturing the bittersweet dynamics of husband-wife relationships. His simplicity and relatability made him not only a beloved comic poet but also the voice of the common man.
The Master of Four Liners
Born on July 29, 1945, in Nangal Choudhary village of Mahendragarh district, Haryana, Surender Sharma pursued his graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University. He performed his first poem in 1966 during his college days, and by 1970, he had started performing professionally. His distinct style and sharp satire soon made him a nationwide favorite.
His trademark “Chaar Laina”— blending humor, satire, and social commentary into just four lines — became his identity. In 1980, T-Series released his first audio cassette titled Chaar Laina Kavi, which became immensely popular and made him a household name. In 2004, he also hosted a radio show called Sharma Ji Se Poochho, where he humorously discussed social and family topics in his signature style.
Surender Sharma’s Unique Perspective
In his book ‘Mujhse Bhala Na Koye’, Sharma writes with characteristic confidence, “Even if the entire country sees me as a common man, I know what makes me special. I am not Lord Hanuman that someone has to remind me of my powers. I must reveal my vast form to the world myself.” This quote not only showcases his humor but also reflects a deeper, thoughtful life philosophy.
Awards and Honors
For his invaluable contribution to literature and humor, Surender Sharma was honored with the Padma Shri in 2013. He also received the Kaka Hathrasi Hasya Samman, Haryana Gaurav, and the Manhar Thahaka Puraskar. He has served as Vice President of the Hindi Academy under the Delhi Government, and was also a member of the Sahitya Akademi and the Central Board of Film Certification.
The Rumor of His Death
In June 2022, rumors of his death circulated on social media. He debunked the fake news in his trademark witty style by sharing a video online saying,“I am Surender Sharma, the comic poet, speaking from Earth. Please don’t assume that I’ve gone ‘up there’ yet.” This humorous response didn’t just deny the rumors but also proved that even at this age, Sharma remains full of life and energy.
With his iconic themes of cold tea and never-ending complaints about his wife, Surender Sharma continues to tickle the hearts of millions. The Mayapuri family sends its warmest birthday wishes to the maestro of humor and satire!
