  •  Can you tell us about your musical journey from childhood?

Thank you! My musical journey began when I was just six years old. My father himself was a violinist, and I was inspired by him to start playing the violin. That’s why I dedicate the Padma Vibhushan award I recently received to my father and my guru, Lakshminarayana.

  • Why did you choose the violin for your musical journey?

As I mentioned, my father played the violin. I wanted to learn from him, so I chose the violin.

Both you and your wife, Kavita Krishnamurti, have been honored with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. What would you like to say about this?

Yes, it is a great honor and privilege for us. My wife Kavita was awarded the Padma Bhushan some time ago, and I recently received the Padma Vibhushan. We are both active in the field of music.

  • What have been some major milestones in your musical journey?

Since the 1980s, I have worked across various musical genres—such as classical, crossover, and global music. I have also done chamber music and experimented with many styles.

  • Which has been your favorite music project?

Every project is special to me. But one particularly memorable project was held in New York to mark the "40th Anniversary of India". Apart from that, I also performed with the famous French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, which was very well received. I’ve also done many special projects with my wife Kavita.

  • What would you like to say about the Pahalgam terrorist attack?

It was a very tragic and shocking incident. It should not have happened, but it did. Those who consider themselves sensitive and aware must strongly condemn such events. I also urge the government to take strict action.

This conversation with Dr. L. Subramaniam is not only inspiring for music lovers but also proves how dedication, discipline, and inspiration from one’s family can elevate an artist to great heights. His words will serve as guidance for young musicians. Mayapuri Magazine extends its best wishes to him for his bright future and continued service to music.
