Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 in Nasrali village of Punjab. He had a keen interest in films since childhood. According to a report, he watched the film 'Dillagi' released in the year 1949 40 times, which makes it clear how deeply the dream of acting was settled in his heart.

Railway job and early struggles

To fulfill his family responsibilities, Dharmendra took up the job of a clerk in the railways. According to reports, his first marriage was done at a very young age, i.e., at the age of 19, to Prakash Kaur. At that time, he was working in the railways and he used to get a salary of only ₹ 125 per month. However, this job did not suit him. He felt that his life was made for films.

To fulfill his dreams, Dharmendra left everything and came to Mumbai. But the reality here was very harsh. He had no place to live, no place to eat. Many times, he had to sleep on an empty stomach. It was not easy to establish himself in the film industry. He kept giving audition after audition, but it was difficult to get work.

First film and fee of ₹ 51 (Dharmendra's Fees)

Dharmendra's struggle paid off when he got his first chance in director Arjun Hingorani's film 'Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere'. This film was released in the year 1960. He got a fee of just ₹51 for this film. But from here onwards, he never looked back.

He has two sons from his first wife, Prakash Kaur - Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, who are also famous Bollywood actors. He has two daughters from Hema Malini -EshaDeol and Ahana Deol.
