Government bans ULLU, ALTBalaji: On July 25, 2025, the Central Government had issued orders to ban 25 OTT apps like ALTT, ULLY, Desiflix, and BigShots. These apps are accused of serving obscene and bold content to the users, which also includes Ekta Kapoor's app ALTT Balaji. Now, after the government banned ALTT, ULLU, and 23 other OTT apps, Ekta Kapoor has issued a statement. Ekta Kapoor said that she and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, are not associated with ALTT in any way.
Ekta Kapoor Confirms ALT Merger With Balaji Telefilms
Let us tell you that Ekta Kapoor shared a post on her Instagram and said, "Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on BSE and NSE, is a professional media institution and after the recent merger of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Limited (which was earlier its wholly owned subsidiary) duly approved by the Hon'ble NCLT, it will operate ALT from June 20, 2025".
Ekta Kapoor Clarifies She’s Not Linked to ALT Anymore
At the same time, Ekta Kapoor further clarified in the post that neither she nor Shobha is associated with ALT. The producer said, "There are reports in the media about ALT being deactivated by the authorities; however, contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated with ALT in any way, and they severed their ties with ALT in June 2021 itself. Any allegation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied, and the media is requested to present accurate facts".
Ekta Kapoor Issues Statement on Balaji Compliance
Along with this, Ekta Kapoor concluded her statement by saying, "Balaji Telefilms Limited fully complies with all applicable laws and continues to conduct its business with the highest standards of corporate governance." While sharing this post, she wrote, "To whomever it may concern".
Alt Balaji was launched this year
Let us tell you that the company's streaming content wing, Alt Balaji, was launched in the year 2017. The platform has produced several successful long-form content as well as reality shows, but has faced court cases over erotica like XXX and Gandi Baat.
Government directive to ban 25 platforms
The government has ordered the blocking of websites and apps of 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, and DesiFlix, for having obscene, indecent, and in some cases pornographic content. According to the report, the apps and websites that the government has banned due to objectionable content include ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots App, DesiFlix, Boomx, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalwa App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, HitPrime, Feneo, ShowX, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflix.
OTT Ban Cites IT Act, IPC 294 & Pornography Laws
For your information, let us tell you that the central government has taken action against these apps under Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Indian Justice Code, 2023, and Section 4 of the Pornographic Pictures Prohibition Act, 1986. According to these laws, any content that insults the dignity of women, spoils social values, or spreads obscenity is required to be stopped, and its violation is considered a punishable offense.
