Today, on 3rd September 2024, Monica Shergill, Vice President, Netflix India Content, said during a press conference: "For the benefit of viewers unaware of the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999, the opening disclaimer has been updated to include the real names and codes of the hijackers. These names are Burger, Chief, Shankar, and Bhola. The code names in the series reflect the names used during the actual incident. India has a rich culture of storytelling and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation".

Let us tell you that 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' was released on Netflix on 29 August. After the release of the series, people on social media started accusing the makers of tampering with facts. The names of the hijackers in the series were shown as "Shankar" and "Bhola", so some viewers accused the series of hiding the real identity of the terrorists and not showing their connection with Islamic extremist groups. After all this, hashtags like #BoycottNetflix and #BoycottBollywood started trending on social media.

Apart from Vijay Verma, the 'IC 814 The Kandahar Hijack' series also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swami and Patralekha. The story of the series revolves around the events that took place inside and outside the plane. At the same time, Anubhav Sinha, famous for powerful films like Mulk, Thappad, Article 17 and Bhed, is all set to debut on streaming. It is co-produced by his banner Benaras Media Works. The series is based on a real-life incident

In 1999, an Indian airliner IC 814 was hijacked by a group of five masked Pakistani terrorists, members of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), while flying from Nepal to New Delhi. They ordered the plane to be flown to several locations, and eventually to Kandahar, which was under the control of the Taliban at the time. Without giving away potential spoilers, the outcome of that hijacking completely changed the direction of terrorism in India.
