Pakistani Content Banned in India: Tensions between India and Pakistan have increased since the Pahalgam attack, and in the meantime, India has banned the Instagram accounts of many Pakistani artists. Meanwhile, on Thursday all OTT platforms have been advised to remove all content of Pakistani origin from their platforms.

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned Pakistani content

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Thursday (May 8, 2025) issued an advisory asking over-the-top (OTT) and media-streaming platforms as well as intermediary services operating in India to stop streaming web series, movies, songs, podcasts and other media content of Pakistani origin with immediate effect. In the press release, the government said, "Cross-border links with Pakistan-based state and non-state elements have been confirmed behind several terrorist attacks in India. Recently, several Indians, a Nepali national were killed and many others injured in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22".

The advisory further said, “In the interest of national security, all OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries operating in India are advised to immediately stop streaming web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content, whether available on a subscription-based model or otherwise, which originate in Pakistan”.

The government explained the reason behind this decision in the advisory

The advisory also said that Rule 3(1)(b) of Part-II of the IT Rules, 2021 provides that intermediaries should make reasonable efforts to ensure that users of their computer resources do not host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, store, update or share any information that may threaten the unity, integrity, defence, security and sovereignty of India, friendly relations with foreign States or public order.

AICWA took action against Pakistani stars

Earlier, the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) had sharply criticised Pakistani actors like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan for their "anti-India" comments following Operation Sindoor, claiming that the actors had publicly condemned India's military response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack in which several civilians were killed. "These statements are not only derogatory to our country, but they also undermine the sacrifices made by innocent civilians and our armed forces. AICWA imposes a complete and unbreakable ban on all Pakistani artistes, producers and financial associates of the Indian entertainment industry. Indian professionals will not associate with Pakistani talent nor share any public or global platform with them," the statement said.
