Vijay Deverakonda Breaks Silence on Tribal Remark: South Indian superstar Vijay Deverakonda has landed in legal trouble over a controversial comment he made about the tribal community during a film event. A formal complaint was filed against the actor at the Sanjeev Reddy Nagar Police Station after a video of his remark went viral, with allegations that his words were derogatory towards the tribal community.

Addressing the issue via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Deverakonda issued a heartfelt apology and clarified his intent. He wrote:

“It has come to my attention that a comment I made during the Retro audio launch event has caused concern among some. I want to sincerely clarify: there was absolutely no intent to hurt or target any community, especially our Scheduled Tribes, whom I deeply respect and consider an integral part of our nation.

I was speaking about unity—how India is one, how our people are one, and how we must move forward together. In what world would I ever deliberately discriminate against any group of Indians, whom I see as my family and my brothers, while urging unity as a country?”

Actor Clarifies the Context Behind His Words

Further elaborating, Deverakonda explained his use of the word “tribal” was rooted in a historical context, not a modern social classification:

“The term ‘tribal’ I used was in the historical and dictionary sense—referring to a time centuries ago when human societies globally were organized into tribes and clans that often engaged in conflict. It was never a reference to the officially classified Scheduled Tribes of India, a classification introduced during colonial and post-colonial periods and formally recognized only in the mid-20th century.

If any part of my message was misunderstood or hurtful, I sincerely apologize. My sole intention was to speak of peace, progress, and unity. I remain committed to using my platform for upliftment and integration, never division.”

Legal Complaint Filed Against Vijay Deverakonda

The controversy erupted after Vijay Deverakonda made the remarks during the pre-release event of the Suriya-starrer film “Retro.” A Hyderabad-based lawyer, Lal Chauhan, lodged a complaint against the actor, demanding action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Several tribal organizations also demanded an immediate apology from Deverakonda.

In his complaint, Chauhan said:

“This is not merely a case of free speech. It concerns the dignity and constitutional protection of marginalized communities. We demand prompt legal action against the actor under applicable SC/ST atrocity laws.”

What Triggered the Controversy?

The controversy stems from Deverakonda’s comments during the “Retro” pre-release event, where he referred to the recent Pahalgam terror incident in Kashmir. While advocating for a solution through education and unity, he commented:

“What’s happening in Kashmir can be resolved by educating them [the terrorists] and ensuring their minds are not corrupted. What do they gain from this? Kashmir is India’s, and Kashmiris are ours. India doesn’t even need to attack Pakistan—they’re already frustrated with their own government. If this continues, they will revolt against it themselves. They’re behaving like tribals from 500 years ago—fighting without any sense.”

This last line sparked criticism, with many accusing Deverakonda of using derogatory language that offended tribal communities.
