Evergreen Bollywood star: The name Rekha itself has the mystery which gives a scope to every boundary but whose  own scope is endless. Some time ago when I was listening a She'r recited by the Great actress Rekha (Rekha Umrao Jaan performance), who is considered to be the first diva of Bollywood, suddenly I felt that it was not Rekha but her soul speaking through her lips .

Rekharekha-collage

Rekha was reciting:

"Allah agar taufeek na de insaan ke bas ka kaam nahi
Faizan-e-mohabbat aam  sahi , irfan-e-mohabbat aam nahi"

The same Rekha, the same beauty, the same heart and the same husky voice which we had seen and heard years ago when we met her. With me was Mayapuri's founder Mr. A. P. Bajaj (whom I used to call Dadu), Pannalal Uncle and J.N. Kumar from Mayapuri. They all had come from Delhi to cover some function in Mumbai.

Rekha's shooting was going on in Juhu bungalow (probably Nagi Villa). So we all had come to (Rekha Khoon Bhari Maang revenge) cover the shooting. She was a super star (still is) but surprisingly she had no pride. When Bajaj ji greeted her with namaste, Rekha held his hand and put it on her head, as if she was taking his blessings. Bajaj ji had a slip of tongue and said, "It is your luck that I met you." Immediately he realized that he had spoken the opposite of what he meant and Dadu quickly said, "Arre, I meant, it is our luck that we met you." Hearing this, Rekha laughed loudly and said, "It happens, it happens, sometimes it happens, but you are right (Rekha Khubsoorat comic role), you are  Senior and it is our privilege to meet you." Rekha was giggling , and I, in my teenage years, was seeing such beauty for the first time in my life. In the shade of her beauty, there was such a golden aura surrounding her that it was dazzling my eyes. Amidst that supernatural beauty, her down to earth behavior was like icing on the cake. Panna Lal Uncle (my Guruji) was taking her long interview, and Rekha, in a melodious voice, was answering every question with pauses. Rekha looked at me lovingly and also gave me a dark chocolate. In those days Rekha was refusing to give interviews to English newspapers and magazines, but she gave an interview to Mayapuri very lovingly. She said, "I  tell  the media all truth during interviews (Rekha Padma Shri award), thinking them to be my friend but then I see that they  take advantage of my goodness and write about me in such a dirty way that I get shocked, reading all those rubbish. I realise that whatever they wrote about me, I am not that person at all. They do such wrong things just to sell their newspapers and magazines (Rekha iconic 1980s films)

Rekha's supernatural beauty and intoxicating voice still have the same magic

Today when I am looking at Rekha again after so many years and  listening to her recitation , it seems that time has stopped. There is not even an iota of difference in her beauty,  her intoxicating voice. Rekha was reciting:---

"Allah agar taufeek na de insaan ke bas ka kaam nahi
Faizan-e-mohabbat aam sahi , irfan-e-mohabbat aam nahi"

Hai farak bada ae jaan-e-Raza, dil dene mein dil lene mein,
Ulfat ka taluq jaan ke bhi, is rishte ki nazakat kya jaano,

Aana hai jo bazm-e-jana mein, pindar-e-khudi ko tod ke aa
Ai hosh-o-khird ke deewane, yahan hosh-o-khird ka kaam nahi

Jo chahte ho wo kehte ho, chup rehne ki lazzat kya jaano
Ye raaz-e-mohabbat hai pyaare, tum raaz-e-mohabbat kya jaano

The same mysterious aura , the same style, the same half smile, the same moist twinkle in the eyes. Bollywood legend Rekha is more mysterious than her films, deeper than her public persona and more tender than her most passionate characters. Her life is like her a favourite art – poetic, unpredictable, full of ups and downs known to no one, but only her. People see her as an eternal diva, always ageless, delicate, vulnerable, silent and beautiful. Behind this bright mistic glow is her own feminine power, grace and flexibility to adapt to any character, transparent like water. "For me, time does not exist. When you enjoy every moment, you learn the art of self-preservation," says Rekha. Every morning is a rebirth for Rekha and she really does. She wakes up, works out, drinks herbal tea, does cardio and yoga and sometimes even dances like a peacock in between exercises. "I dance in between my workouts. There are no set rules. (Though I never ever took any dance lessons ) This applies to my life too. You have to use every part of your being. I do it every moment," she says. Rekha doesn't live to survive, she chooses to live.

She is not afraid of loneliness. "I am alone. I don't network or meet people. It is very unfair for a person to talk about anyone else ."

She admits to a thousand stories about her with a subtle smile. Rekha admits that she prefers her own company. She values her small circle and the simple, everyday tasks that she can take care of. "Luxury means meeting whomever you want, wherever you want to go, whenever you want, doing whatever you want. As we achieve more, we want more in life. But I am content with the little things," she says, ever practical.

One particular old wardrobe of hers has a story to tell. "All the jewellery I have is my mother's. Well, just a few sets. But I am creative. I wear it differently. Clothes, I mix and match. I had a big collection of designer clothes. Now they have become very expensive. I don't go on dates or parties (Rekha enduring Bollywood legacy), so what do I have to dress up for? My best outfit is from home to the airport... that is my catwalk."

Rekha is almost philosophical in her approach to change, at every age. "Age or ill health do not scare me. What is there to be afraid of? Worry as little as possible about what is not in your hands. I do not abuse myself, do not take drugs, eat simple vegetarian food, I know what is good and what is bad. I do not get involved in wrong things. Everyone should practice this. Life goes on before you even realise."

There is often speculation about her love life, but she candidly answers every question directly. The only  marriage of Rekha ended tragically, but she chose independence and self-love instead of seeking relationships again . "My purpose is beyond personal love," she admits. Her voice is  very soft but heart is open. It is about love, commitment, sacrifice. Her answers to all are the same, "acceptance and peace".

Rekha

Rekha finds solace and meaning in poetry, especially Urdu sher and dohas. She is known to recite poetry on reality shows, other events and in front of friends. Always stressing that she stitches her wounds and her joys together. "Zindagi to bas ek musafir hai, thak kar kahin ruk jaati hai. Hai yeh safar hi asal mein, manzil to siraf ek bahana hai." (Life is a traveller who stops when  gets tired, this journey is real, the destination is just an excuse.) When she recites a couplet or sher, she speaks softly , immersed in emotion, sometimes pausing so that the memories pass through her eyes before she finishes.

She loves Great Shayars like Parveen Shakir, Mehndi Hassan, Jigar Moradabadi and Ghalib. Rekha sometimes gives voice to their poems. "Kuch is tarah teri palkein, meri palkon se milne de, aansoo tere saare meri palkon pe saja de." Her favourite is, "Kuch bhi nahi chahaa zindagi se, bas ek tujh saa humsafar chahaa tha."

Rekha

Rekha's words reflect both intelligence and innocence. When asked about regrets, she laughs. "Life is a river, sometimes flowing over rocks, sometimes gently over soft ground. But regrets have no place in my diary." In interviews, she always speaks philosophically. "I am okay with who I am and who I am not. What I know and what I don't know and what is possible for me and what is not. Life is unfolding as an infinite web of possibilities and I am ready to choose from it."

Rekha fondly remembers her mother. "All the jewellery I have is my mother's. Just a few sets but my mother gave me the gift of life, love and emotions." Rekha has a deep attachment to her roots, but her ability to sever ties with anything that does not give her peace is equally deep and amazing.

Rekha's spirituality beats in her heart. She is a great believer of God, reads Vedas, Urdu Shayari and believes that the only true purpose is to live in certain dayre . Quoting David Whyte , she says, "As we mature, the only choice we have is how we live in our vulnerability, how we become bigger and braver through our intimacy with extinction." Her message is that, there is courage in loss, generosity in pain and joy in solitude.

Today her life is not limited to about being just an actress but in accepting life as it is. She says, "I am learning to live in the present but with the experiences of my life today. With my eyes wide open, not closed." She sees herself not as a star but as a human being who is living. If asked what she wants, Rekha will simply say, "Zakhm dil ke bhar gaye hain, abhi to muskurana aaya hai."

Rekha

Many times when Rekha sings in her deep voice, "
"Justajoo jiski thi, usko to na paaya humne,
Is bahaane se magar dekh li duniya humne.
Tujhko ruswa na kiya, khud bhi pashemaan na hue,
Ishq ki rasm ko is tarah nibhaya humne."
then it is obvious that not only Rekha's eyes gets welled up , but the person she was longing for, also must be in equal pain.

Rekha

Rekha is a very good and noble person, very honest, down to earth, such a great actress, such a big personality of a world level, but no arrogance or ego. She likes gardening, designing clothes, decorating the house, singing. She treats everyone with great affection and respect.

Rekha

The one who could not belong to Rekha is his loss. The lessons of her life are a mixture of her poetic soul. A soulful musical mantra written by a woman who reinvents herself with every sunrise, teaches herself new things, treats pain and laughter as equal companions, and moves on with no regrets.

"Raahein dhuan dhuan hain, safar gard gard hai, aankhon ka tha kasoor na dil ka kasoor tha."
