Sunny Sanskaari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a full-on entertainment package. Since you’ve previously excelled in many romantic-comedy films, do you feel most comfortable in this genre?

Absolutely, this is one of my favorite genres. I really enjoyed making it, and I feel that when I write, I can naturally express myself well in this genre. The characters I choose and the experiences from my life fit very comfortably into this genre. So I can confidently say that this is my favorite genre.

The casting of the film seems very interesting. Was this planned from the beginning, or did you want to explore something new during the process?

After we finished writing the film, we gradually started approaching each actor. Varun came on board first, followed by Janhvi. Then I met Sanya and Rohit. I wanted to present them in a new way, which I found exciting. After that, Maniesh Paul and Akshay Oberoi were cast. My casting director Mukesh Chhabra also played a big part. Our intention was to do something unique, something good, bring in interesting artists — that was our only goal.

The film has a mix of light-hearted moments, emotion, and romance. As a director, how challenging was it to present these three elements together naturally?

There’s never a habit because every film is a new film. It’s always a new challenge, and you have to rise to it. When I write, I focus on presenting my characters properly, writing about them sincerely, and thinking about how I can enhance them further. Balancing comedy, emotion, and fun is very important. So my focus is first on these aspects during the writing stage, and then I try to translate them effectively onto the screen.

Your films always have a unique vibe — whether it’s humor or emotion. So what is the ‘Shashank Khaitan touch’ that shines through in every romantic comedy?

I think the most unique aspect of my films is that they are completely cinematic while also being slightly real. They won’t be unnecessarily melodramatic. There will be drama and fun, but at the same time, the story will remain connectable and relatable. It won’t be a film where viewers feel the characters aren’t real or they can’t relate to them. This is what gives my stories and films their distinct identity.

Do today’s audiences focus only on stardom, or do they also give equal importance to good stories and content?

I think content is the most important because if there is no story, what’s the point of making a film? So having a strong and good story is essential. However, I believe there are still many reasons why people watch films in our country. I don’t think star power has completely lost its significance. In my opinion, everything is necessary — a good story, opportunities for new talent, and strong stars. When these three elements come together, our film industry can become even stronger and better.
