Wamiqa Gabbi, who appeared as Geet’s cousin in Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s blockbuster Jab We Met (2007), has now emerged as a prominent name in Hindi cinema. She has been seen in films like Baby John, Khufiya, and 83, but before entering Bollywood, she had already made a strong mark in Punjabi films. Now, she is once again in the spotlight for her upcoming film Bhool Chuk Maaf, where she stars opposite Rajkummar Rao. In a recent conversation with a media house, Wamiqa spoke about the film, her shooting experience, and her career. Here's what she shared:
- When you were offered the script of Bhool Chuk Maaf and read it for the first time, what was your reaction?
I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the script narration. I was so happy to be chosen for the role of ‘Titli’. Even during the shoot, we would be constantly laughing, especially while filming one particular scene in Varanasi. The moment we wrapped the shoot, the only thought in my head was – when will this release, I want my family to watch it soon.
- You made your debut in 2007 with Jab We Met as Geet’s cousin and now, in 2025, you’re playing the lead in Bhool Chuk Maaf. How would you describe this journey?
It’s been a beautiful journey full of learning. Every film and every character has taught me something new. Bhool Chuk Maaf is a very special project and I’m genuinely excited about it.
- Rajkummar Rao has proven himself as one of the finest actors in the industry. What was it like working with him?
It was a great experience working with Rajkummar. I was honestly thrilled to be cast alongside him. My parents were especially happy when they heard I was working with him. I was a little nervous at first, but Rajkummar and director Karan Sharma made me feel so comfortable on set. That’s what allowed me to give my best. The atmosphere on set was really positive and fun.
- In many households, government jobs are still seen as a status symbol. Do you think that mindset is changing now, or is a 'government job guy' still considered the ideal groom, like it’s portrayed in your film?
I think this mindset still exists in many places. A government job represents security, pensions, and other benefits. Earlier it was even more prevalent, but now it’s slowly changing. Still, in smaller towns, this thinking is quite strong.
The film also features veteran actors like Zakir Hussain, Seema Pahwa, and Piyush Mishra. Who did you have the most fun working with?
Zakir Sir played my father in the film. Our on-screen relationship was fun and full of warmth. Shooting with him was delightful – his natural humor and comic timing are brilliant.
- If you could relive one day from the shoot of Bhool Chuk Maaf, which one would it be?
The night we shot a scene on a boat on the Ganga river. The lights on the ghats, the calm waves of the Ganga – it was such a divine and peaceful experience. On one side, people were offering prayers, and on the other, cremations were taking place – it felt like the entire cycle of life unfolding before our eyes.
- This is director Karan Sharma’s first major Bollywood film. How was it working with him?
Karan is a very clear-minded and sensible director. He has a great sense of humor and always kept the set relaxed and positive. Working with him was very easy and smooth.
- The film was shot during the hot summer months of May and June in Banaras. Was there any fun BTS (Behind The Scenes) moment on set?
It was so hot that nobody had the energy to play pranks! (laughs) But Rajkummar’s improvisations were enough to keep us laughing. He’d suddenly do something unexpected and the whole scene would have to be cut!
- You’ve had a long journey with ups and downs in the industry. Now you’re finally getting the recognition and roles you deserve. When you look back, what do you feel? How has this journey changed you?
I’ve been in the industry for quite some time now, and it’s all thanks to the constant support of my parents. They always made me feel safe and grounded. I also had amazing friends who stood by me. That’s why I never felt disheartened. I truly believe that when your energy is clean, you attract good people and opportunities. Once I was truly ready, I feel like the right opportunities found me.
There was a time I used to think, “What if I was born in a superstar’s family – life would’ve been so much easier.” But now, I’m grateful for my life, my father – I believe I was born to be a superstar in my own way.
- You recently visited Delhi – how was your experience there?
I’ve lived just three hours away from Delhi (in Chandigarh). My first film Bittu Boss (2012) was shot in Delhi, and I stayed in Paharganj for about a month and a half. We visited for two days recently and after finishing work, I really enjoyed the local food. Delhi’s chaat has its own magic.
- What upcoming projects can your fans look forward to?
I’ve done a Tamil and a Telugu film recently. One of them is called Jeannie, which is a fantasy film. Apart from that, I’m also working on Vikas Bahl’s Dil Ka Darwaza Khol Na Darling.
For your information, Wamiqa’s film Bhool Chuk Maaf is all set to release in cinemas on May 23, 2025.
